A Transposition Method
for Wind Musicians

To help musicians in concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras
and ensembles of all types  learn how to transpose.

A Band Director talks to a Flutist in the school band

“The E♭ Soprano Clarinet is broken? Can you transpose the “Eefer” part tonight?”

Suddenly, the flutist needs to play music written for another instrument. Could you do that? You can, and for ANY instrument, if you know how to transpose.
Here are situations where transposition skill can save your performance. You play:

  1. B♭ Trumpet in a concert band but your orchestra music is for Trumpet in D
  2. F Horn but your part is written for E♭ Horn
  3. E♭ Alto Sax in a jazz band and want to cover an Alto Flute (in G) solo
  4. B♭ Clarinet with a church choir but the only music is from a hymnal (in C)
  5. B♭ Soprano Sax and want to play an Oboe solo (in C)

The first time I needed to transpose my immediate reaction was absolute panic.
“How am I going to play that?”

Maybe you face a similar situation? What will you do you when you are asked to transpose another instrument’s music?

If you want to add transposition to your musical skills, you’ve come to the right place.
